A simple tool for verifying product safety and quality.
Prevent injuries caused by sharp metal edges!
The Sharp Edge Tester is a globally recognized testing instrument that complies with UL1439 standards, providing an objective assessment of sharp-edge safety.
A dedicated TC-3 tape kit, attached to the tip of the tester’s arm, is pressed against the edge under a constant tension of 6.7 N, and moved back and forth over a fixed distance.
This allows precise measurement of the hazard potential of burrs or sharp areas.
The TC-3 tape simulates a human fingertip, and the condition of the tape after testing is used to evaluate the risk level.
UL1439 is a U.S. safety standard concerning the Sharpness of Edges of equipment.
It defines procedures for quantitatively evaluating the risk of injury caused by sharp edges on products that may come into contact with users.
The standard applies to a wide range of products — home appliances, office equipment, medical devices, and household items — primarily aiming to prevent injuries caused by accidental contact with sharp edges.
Products covered are generally defined as “all electrical and electronic equipment that may be touched by ordinary users.”
In Japan, JIS T 9112 (a safety standard for infant products) applies to products for babies and toddlers, whereas UL1439mainly targets general consumer and industrial products.
Although their scopes and risk assessment methods differ, both share the same goal of preventing injury from sharp edges.
UL1439 testing is also used in the safety evaluation of copiers and AV equipment designs, and has been adopted in the JBMIA (Japan Business Machine and Information System Industries Association) safety guidelines.
Using the Sharp Edge Tester, a three-layer detection tape that simulates human skin is pressed against the target edge with a constant force of 6.7 N.
The tape is moved 50 mm back and forth (total travel of 100 mm) along the edge.
If the outer two layers of the tape are not cut, the sample passes; if either of the outer two layers is cut, it fails.
Pass: Neither of the outer two layers of the detection tape is cut.
Fail: Either of the outer two layers of the detection tape is cut.
